Photosynthesis

This week's lecture and reading has been a terrible headach. Understanding how photosynthesis works is a hard topic to understand, but a topic not so hard to understand is the consquences in deforestation. There are many reasons why we need to plant 3 trees for every tree we cut down, one being that planting more trees mean planting more life. Not only do trees need and thrive off Carbon Dioxide, but they also emit a very important thing we call oxygen. I don't know how much energy is produced by photosynthesis, but I do know that it is a ton! Before reading this week, I didn't realize how much we need plants to live. We're extremely dependent on plants. Not only do they proved oxygen, which we need in order to breathe and live, we also need plants in order to eat. Plants provide the animals we eat with nutrients and those animals provide us with the nutrients that we need. Granted, we don't only get the nutrients we need from animals and meat, but we also get them directly from plants!

Back to deforestation! There are people who have thought about what deforestation has done to the environment, so much so that they have created Tree farms. Watch this video: Tree Farms

  1. Planting trees is not all that difficult to do either! It would be easy to gather a group of friends and just plan a day with a picnic and planting. It seems like people make excuses to not help keep the world beautiful.

  2. Good thoughts! it's interesting to see just how much everything is cyclical. If the plants we depend on to live cannot survive on this earth, we will not survive. Period. I know that sounds pessimistic but I think we need to be confronted with that fact. I think I'll think twice before putting that glass bottle in the waste basket now.

  3. I like that you posted a video! I also liked your thoughts about how vital trees are to our existence. I have a friend who went to Canada to plant trees for the summer... at the time I thought it was strange, but now I am glad he did! Thanks for you thoughts

  4. Wow..I like the video. I had never heard of tree farms before. It is amazing that they claim they will be able to cut down 5 acres of these "super" trees/day without any problems. This could be a helpful resource for timber, but still I have to think does that mean they are creating these farms in order to stop deforestation or to simply add to the current timber supply? It would be great if tree farms could take the place of "natural" growing trees that are being deforested. The the animals could be happy in there forests and woodlands... that is until we need their room, right? :(

  5. I kinda wonder how many other resources were used to make this forest (like water, fuel for trucks, etc.) Most of these trees are valuable for pulp, not lumber since the wood is not as strong. The last thought is that these are not "forests" these are tree crops. A forest is more than an assemblage of trees...
